On the Coldest night of the winter season thus far, there was a lot of fire to keep everyone warm in the Arena at Prosper High School where the Little Elm Lobos (18-6) led by RJ Hampton defeated Josh Davis and the Prosper Eagles (21-2) 54-52 in a very tight and physical game.
This game pitted the top two teams in the 5A Region II District 14 and with Prosper having the Number 2 ranking in all of 5A basketball, you can bet Little Elm wanted to make a statement against a team of that caliber.
Prosper held the lead for much of the game with 6-6 guard Zachary Wrightsil leading the way with 19 points and Josh Davis running the point with 11 points.
The Lobos turned up the heat right away scoring 8 straight points with two back-to-back 3’s from RJ Hampton. Prosper was able to sustain the run and chipped away at the lead and stayed the course to end the first period with the Lobos leading 14 – 12 after the first period.
During the second period the crowd was treated to a much more physical game with both sides going hard to the basket and running into the big men for both teams however, neither team was ever in the bonus in the first half as the referees let them play. Prosper Eagle Junior Josh Davis displayed his talents as the court general driving and finishing with tear drops as well as driving and kicking to open big men down low for easy layups. With such great point guard play, the Eagles dominated the 2nd quarter and led the Lobos 35 -23 at the half.
The intense physical play continued well into the 3rd quarter with RJ Hampton getting hit in the face going for a loose ball causing him to have to leave the court for a few minutes to address a bleeding lip but that did not slow down his aggressive play as he worked even harder to get open to have the ball in his hands. The Lobos protected the ball behind their senior point guard Javian Williams who is only 5-6 but has amazing court speed and great court vision and fought back to narrow Prosper’s lead to just 5 points at 44-39 after the 3rd period.
In the final period the Prosper Arena was nothing short of a madhouse with both sides standing, clapping, cheering, and booing. The prosper side drew a big gasp a minute and a half in as Josh Davis went down for about 20 seconds of play with a right calf cramp before the referees blew the whistle. The crowd was stunned seeing their point guard sprawling on end of the court with 6:20 left to go in the game. After the referee timeout, Josh stayed in the game to help protect the narrow 2 point lead at 45-43.
Tavieon White and Kyle Jessen of Prosper both had steller rebounding performances and kept Prosper with the narrow lead as end of the game drew near with just over 2 minutes remaining, Prosper Eagles were up by 5.
The Lobos finally tied the game at 47-47 with 3:20 left in regulation with a RJ Hampton floater in the lane but the Eagles still had one more run in them scored with an old fashioned 3 pt play and a couple of free throws to put them up 52 -47 with 2:07 left to play.
A quick steal, layup, one made free throw from a technical foul on Prosper and then a fabulous up and under from RJ Hampton in the paint in just a few seconds opened back up the door for the Lobos only being down by 2 at 52-50 Eagles.
Then in a wild possession, the 5 ft 6 inch point guard Javian Williams drains a big 3 from the left wing giving the Lobos their first lead in what seemed like an eternity with 29 seconds left in the game.
Prosper missed on the ensuing possession and fouled RJ Hampton on the other end as he drove to the basket. RJ made 1 of 2 giving Prosper one last chance with 2.2 seconds and the length of the court to go.
At the inbound, Kyle Jessen heaved it from half court hitting only the right side of the rim and the visiting Lobos come into Prosper and go home with the “W”.
Final score: Little Elm Lobos 54 – Prosper Eagles 52
